Utrecht Celebrates Circular Innovation at March Event

2025-02-23 community

Utrecht, Sunday, 23 February 2025.
On March 14, 2025, Utrecht will host a competition showcasing innovative ideas for circular sustainability, culminating in a national stage engagement for the winners.

Competition Details

The Utrechtse Circulaire Innovatie Top (CIT) will spotlight innovative entrepreneurs from the Utrecht region, offering them a platform to develop their sustainability initiatives [1]. The event, organized by VNO-NCW and supported by the Utrecht province, will feature dynamic pitch presentations to an expert jury panel, with successful contestants advancing to the national finals scheduled for April 11, 2025 [1].

Regional Innovation Categories

The competition has attracted notable pioneers across three distinct categories. In the Circular Changemaker category, contestants include Stamhuis (retail construction), Mended (online clothing repair), and Faay Vianen (prefab walls and ceilings). The Circular Start-up category features Sustainer (digital standardized building system), Bikflip (children’s bicycle subscription), and Studio Wae (upcycled floor materials). The Circular Chain Collaboration category showcases Waterwood (circular wood from water works), De Groene Asfaltcentrale, and Keten RAW materials [1].

Utrecht’s Broader Sustainability Context

This event aligns with Utrecht’s established position in sustainability research and development. The region is already participating in significant circular innovation research, as evidenced by its inclusion in the Place-based circular society innovations (CSI) project, an international initiative running from October 2024 to October 2027 [3]. The University of Utrecht’s Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development actively contributes to this momentum by investigating and developing processes for innovative sustainability transitions [2].

Growing Momentum in Circular Innovation

The timing of this competition reflects a broader regional push toward circular economy initiatives. Earlier this month, on February 8-9, 2025, the region hosted a significant hackathon focused on circular construction industry solutions [4]. According to André van Schie, Economics Deputy, ‘The nominated entrepreneurs are all building smart and sustainable solutions for a future-proof region’ [1]. The competition serves as a platform to recognize these innovations while promoting Utrecht’s commitment to a sustainable future where residents and entrepreneurs collectively contribute to a circular economy [1].
