AI startup Rabbit unveils the R1, a pocket-sized AI assistant, at CES 2024. Priced at $199, it aims to streamline digital interactions by navigating apps efficiently. The device, powered by Rabbit OS and a Large Action Model, promises an app-free internet experience.

The Rabbit R1 is designed to significantly enhance how users interact with digital devices. By utilizing Rabbit OS, which leverages the Large Action Model (LAM), the R1 can perform tasks across various apps seamlessly. This innovation is particularly beneficial for users who find navigating through numerous applications cumbersome. Rabbit OS learns user behavior and can predict actions, making the experience smoother and more intuitive.
How Rabbit OS Works
Rabbit OS, the operating system powering the R1, is built on the Large Action Model. This model is capable of inferring and modeling human actions on computer interfaces. By learning user intentions when using specific apps, Rabbit OS can reliably and quickly replicate those actions. This not only saves time but also reduces the frustration associated with navigating complex user interfaces. We have reached a point where our smartphones are cluttered with hundreds of apps, each with intricate UX designs that do not communicate with one another,’ Lyu stated. Rabbit aims to create an intuitive, app-free experience powered by AI, moving beyond mere text generation to executing actions on behalf of users.
User Experiences and Feedback
Initial user feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. One user on Reddit praised the R1 for its ability to record and summarize a 56-minute Teams meeting efficiently. The clarity of the voice recording and the brief yet comprehensive summary were particularly noted. Another user highlighted the distraction-free environment the R1 provides, allowing for focused note-taking during meetings. Despite some early-stage battery issues, users appreciate the device’s role as a specialized tool rather than a smartphone substitute.
Security Concerns
However, the R1 has not been without its challenges. In June, a group of white hat hackers known as Rabbitude reported gaining access to Rabbit’s internal codebase and hardcoded API keys. This breach, initially denied by Rabbit, was later addressed by revoking and rotating the compromised keys. While Rabbit insists that no sensitive user information was accessed, the incident has raised questions about the company’s data security practices. Rabbit has since taken measures to improve its security posture, including hiring an outside firm for a thorough security audit.

Despite these security hiccups, Rabbit remains optimistic about the future of the R1. The company has already started pre-sales, with shipments expected to begin by the end of March 2024.
