TU Delft Expands Presence in The Hague with New Campus
The Hague, Friday, 5 July 2024.
TU Delft has approved the development of its Campus Den Haag, part of a multi-campus strategy to better integrate technological expertise with policy and governance. The expansion aims to enhance education, research, and societal impact in climate, energy, digitalization, and security.
A Strategic Multicampus Approach
TU Delft’s decision to expand its presence in The Hague is a significant component of its broader multicampus strategy, which also includes campuses in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. This approach aims to leverage the strengths of each location to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation. The Campus Den Haag will serve as a hub where students, researchers, and policymakers can converge, ensuring that cutting-edge technological advancements are seamlessly integrated into policy-making and governance.
Focus on Societal Themes
The new development will center around three critical societal themes: Climate & Energy, Digitalization, and Safety & Security. These focus areas reflect the pressing global challenges that require innovative solutions. The campus will offer new transdisciplinary master’s programs and professional education under the provisional title ‘Academy for Public Professionals’. This initiative aims to equip public sector professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to address complex societal issues[1].
Enhancing Educational and Research Facilities
In addition to the existing Master of Engineering and Policy Analysis (EPA) program, the campus will host a new interfaculty research center focused on Climate Safety & Security. This center will be further developed to foster interdisciplinary research and collaboration. By 2026, the Campus Den Haag will move to a new University Building on Spui, a central location in The Hague, facilitating even greater synergy with local and international institutions like Leiden University and other knowledge partners[1].
The Significance of The Hague Location
The strategic choice of The Hague, known as the city of international law and governance, underscores TU Delft’s commitment to societal impact. By situating the campus in the heart of policy-making, TU Delft aims to contribute to informed political decisions, enhance policy formation, and enrich public debate. This aligns with the university’s mission to address societal challenges through technological innovation and research[1].
Celebrating Progress
The announcement of this significant step forward was celebrated during a summer social event on 26 June 2024 at New Babylon, the current location of the Hague campus. This event brought together stakeholders, students, and faculty to discuss the potential and future of the Campus Den Haag. The new name and direction were officially unveiled, marking a new chapter in TU Delft’s history of innovation and societal contribution[1].
