Methaplanet raises €6M to boost biogas production efficiency, aligning with EU climate goals and sustainable energy initiatives. The investment supports R&D, new facilities, and biogas plant efficiency.

Strategic Investment for Sustainable Growth

Netherlands-based Methaplanet has successfully raised €6 million in a Series A funding round led by Pensioenfonds ABP and supported by EIT InnoEnergy and angel investors. This strategic infusion of capital aims to bolster Methaplanet’s efforts in optimizing agricultural waste streams for biogas production, thereby contributing to a more sustainable future. The announcement, made on May 14, 2024, highlights the company’s commitment to enhancing biogas production efficiency and supporting the EU’s RePowerEU goals of achieving 35 billion cubic meters (bcm) of biomethane by 2030.

Innovative Solutions for Biogas Production

Methaplanet’s innovative approach involves the production of energy pellets from straw-based manure, which significantly enhances the efficiency of biogas plants. By incorporating these pellets, biogas plants can maximize their production, making the process more profitable for farmers and reducing their ecological footprint. Methaplanet’s CEO, Xander Sandell, emphasized the company’s dedication to sustainability, stating, ‘We aim to contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions by operating with a sustainable supply chain.’

Impact on Agriculture and Environment

Methaplanet’s technology holds particular promise for the agricultural sector. By converting agricultural waste into valuable energy products, the company helps farmers turn a potential liability into a profitable asset. This not only supports sustainable farming practices but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Martijn Olthof, investment manager at ABP’s Dutch Energy Transition Fund, noted, ‘Methaplanet’s ability to convert agricultural waste streams into sustainable energy products will help realize significant positive environmental impacts.’

Expanding Facilities and Research Efforts

The €6 million investment will enable Methaplanet to establish new production facilities for energy pellets, with plans to expand in the Netherlands. Additionally, the funding will accelerate research and development efforts, allowing the company to advance its product offerings and further optimize biogas production processes. Methaplanet already operates a factory in France and a demonstration facility in Spain, showcasing its proven technology and commitment to innovation.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Prospects

The investment round led by ABP and supported by EIT InnoEnergy underscores the collaborative efforts required to achieve significant advancements in sustainable energy. Jacob Ruiter, CEO of EIT InnoEnergy for the Benelux region, remarked, ‘Methaplanet’s solution to turn typically low-value feedstock into highly efficient pellets for biogas production can contribute significantly to achieving the EU climate goals.’ As Methaplanet continues to innovate and expand, it remains poised to play a crucial role in the global transition to renewable energy.
