DOPS Recycling Technologies secures €5 million from ROM InWest to advance innovative waste processing technology capable of converting waste into reusable products, a major boost for environmental solutions.

Driving Innovation in Waste Management

This spring, ROM InWest, in collaboration with InnovationQuarter and other private partners, invested €5 million in DOPS Recycling Technologies, a company based in North Holland. This investment is intended to propel DOPS’s development of innovative waste processing technologies, specifically their Direct Carbon Immobilization (DCI) technology. The DCI technology focuses on converting difficult waste streams into valuable products such as syngas and activated carbon while producing significantly lower carbon emissions compared to traditional methods [1].

Support from the North Holland Ecosystem

DOPS’s journey has been marked by support from regional development initiatives in North Holland. Previously, in 2022, DOPS received a voucher from the Energy & Climate Innovation Program of South Holland, enabling them to perform crucial laboratory tests in conjunction with Gouda Refractories [1]. The role of Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Noord Holland Noord (ONHN) was pivotal in connecting DOPS with strategic partners, facilitating its involvement in acceleration programs like GO!-NH, and securing early-stage financing [1].

Advancing to Commercial Readiness

The €5 million funding aims to elevate DOPS’s technology from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 to TRL 7-8. This involves transitioning the technology from lab-scale demonstrations to larger scale validations, focusing on efficiency testing and preparing for the first potential commercial plant setup. According to Reynier de Monchy, investment manager at ROM InWest, DOPS technology is poised to tackle pressing societal challenges linked to sustainable energy and circular raw materials [1].

Strategic Partnerships and Future Plans

ROM InWest’s investment was possible due to a synergistic collaboration with InnovationQuarter, where private investors quickly provided additional support. The strategic foresight of fund managers such as PIM Noord-Holland has ensured that DOPS maintains momentum, involving plans to initiate pilot installations potentially at industrial facilities like brick factories or waste processors. These initiatives are designed to further refine the technology towards a fossil-free industrial application [1].
