Feminist AI at TU Delft, led by Sara Colombo and Geert-Jan Houben, prioritizes social benefits over performance, tackling biases and systemic inequalities with a critical, inclusive approach.

Redefining AI Development Through Feminist Principles

In a groundbreaking initiative announced on March 12, 2025, TU Delft researchers are pioneering a transformative approach to artificial intelligence development. Sara Colombo, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering and co-director of the Convergence Feminist Generative AI Lab, emphasizes that this feminist AI framework addresses various forms of marginalization, including gender bias, racial discrimination, and disability bias [1]. This innovative approach comes at a crucial time, as demonstrated by the recent Women in AI Benelux Gala in Amsterdam, where Colombo’s work integrating design, AI, and human values gained recognition for ensuring AI systems are inclusive and empowering [2].

Challenging Traditional Data Assumptions

Pro Vice Rector Magnificus AI Geert-Jan Houben highlights a critical insight about AI development: the fundamental challenge lies not in AI itself, but in how data represents reality. ‘The picture is coded by data and the picture is therefore by definition inaccurate and vulnerable to lots of effects,’ Houben explains [1]. This recognition of data’s inherent biases represents a significant shift from conventional approaches that often treat data as purely objective. The initiative demonstrates TU Delft’s commitment to developing more equitable AI systems that acknowledge and address these inherent biases.

Practical Applications and Impact

The Feminist AI initiative has already produced tangible tools for addressing AI ethics and bias. Among these are the High-risk EU AI Act Toolkit (HEAT) and SOF+IA, a chatbot developed with feminist approaches [1]. These practical applications demonstrate how feminist principles can be effectively integrated into AI development, creating technology that better serves diverse communities. The project’s timing aligns with growing international recognition of the need for more inclusive AI development, as evidenced by the recent celebrations of women’s achievements in AI across the Benelux region [2].
