On June 17, 2024, Nordex Electrolyzers introduced a 500-kW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer, marking a significant milestone in green hydrogen technology in Spain.

A Major Step Forward in Green Hydrogen Technology

Nordex Electrolyzers, a collaborative venture between the Government of Navarra and Nordex Group, has achieved a significant technological milestone with the unveiling of its 500-kW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer. Presented at a ceremony in Lumbier, Navarra, the prototype is the largest of its kind developed in Spain. The event was attended by prominent figures including Maria Chivite, President of the Government of Navarra, and Mikel Irujo, Minister for Industry, Ecological Transition, and Business Digitalization of Navarra. This electrolyzer represents a crucial step towards advancing green hydrogen technology, which is pivotal for renewable energy integration and decarbonizing industrial sectors.

Technical Specifications and Capabilities

The 500-kW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer developed by Nordex Electrolyzers can produce over 10 kilograms of hydrogen per hour with an energy consumption of less than 50 kilowatt-hours per kilogram. This efficiency is a testament to the expertise of Nordex Electrolyzers’ team, which consists of 26 specialists in renewable energy and hydrogen technology. The prototype aligns with Nordex Electrolyzers’ business development plan, which aims to finalize the design of commercially viable MW-scale electrolyzers by 2026.

Strategic Importance and Financial Backing

The development of this prototype is not just a technological achievement but also a strategic industrial milestone for Navarra and Spain. Maria Chivite emphasized the importance of this project in supporting the region’s focus on renewable energies and green hydrogen. Financial backing from Sodena, which holds a 15% stake in Nordex Electrolyzers, and partial funding from the European Commission’s Hy2Tech program, amounting to 12 million euros, have been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition. Minister Mikel Irujo highlighted Sodena’s financial support as a key driver of such strategic initiatives.

Future Prospects and Industry Impact

Looking ahead, Nordex Electrolyzers aims to integrate hydrogen generation into Nordex Group’s value chain, leveraging competitive synergies to enhance sustainability and efficiency. With the demand for hydrogen projected to surge by approximately 700% in the next three decades, the development of efficient, scalable electrolyzers is crucial. Luis Solla, CEO of Nordex Electrolyzers, reiterated the company’s commitment to high-quality, sustainable manufacturing practices that support the transition to a clean energy-based economy. This prototype marks the beginning of a promising journey for Nordex Electrolyzers towards becoming a leading manufacturer in the green hydrogen sector.
