Hoeksche Waard is pioneering green childcare centers to educate children on climate change and sustainability, serving as a model for other Dutch municipalities tackling environmental challenges.

A Model for Environmental Education

In response to the increasingly evident impacts of climate change, such as higher temperatures and prolonged droughts, the municipality of Hoeksche Waard is actively promoting green and cool childcare facilities. These facilities aim to impart crucial knowledge about sustainable living environments to children at an early age. This initiative not only raises awareness among young learners but also serves as an exemplary model for other Dutch municipalities striving to address climate challenges [1].

Research and Implementation

In 2024, the Hoekschewaards Landschap association, commissioned by the municipality, conducted a study to identify the needs of daycare centers for becoming more environmentally friendly. The research highlighted a demand for practical, immediately applicable information. As a result, a comprehensive information package titled ‘Step by Step to a Greener and Cooler Daycare’ was developed. This package includes a practical roadmap for greening daycare centers and a ‘Doeboek’ filled with educational and enjoyable activities focused on themes like heat, water, and nature [1].

De Wiedewei: Leading by Example

De Wiedewei, an organization with multiple daycare centers, participated actively in the research and has started transforming their outdoor spaces into greener environments. This transformation underscores the importance of green spaces for play, learning, and healthy development. Hein Verbiest, the climate adaptation alderman, praised De Wiedewei’s efforts in demonstrating how increased greenery can make a significant difference. With the expertise of Merel Nelemans, a garden coach from Hoekschewaards Landschap, a guide full of practical tips and engaging activities has been created to help daycare centers across Hoeksche Waard transform their playgrounds into greener, cooler, and healthier spaces [1].

Community Participation and Funding

The initiative encourages community involvement and offers opportunities for volunteers to contribute to the greening efforts. The municipality supports these projects financially, providing subsidies of up to €10,000 to facilitate the transformation of daycare environments. The information package and guidance from experts like Merel Nelemans are available online, offering resources and expert advice for those interested in participating in the movement towards sustainable childcare facilities [1].
