Dutch Startup Transforms Regular Bikes into Tricycles for Elderly Riders
Nijmegen, Tuesday, 6 August 2024.
Tworby, a Nijmegen-based startup, has developed an innovative module that converts standard bicycles into tricycles, enhancing mobility for older adults. Recent funding from the Innovation and Energy Fund Gelderland will support the company’s expansion and product development.
Enhancing Mobility and Independence
The core mission of Tworby is to increase the vitality, freedom, and independence of the elderly. This innovative balance module can be fitted to any (electric) bicycle, transforming it into a stable tricycle. This allows elderly individuals to safely continue cycling on their own familiar bikes. The module is designed to offer a cost-effective alternative to purchasing a new tricycle, thus enabling more people to maintain their mobility and enjoy cycling for longer.
Significant Investment for Scaling Up
Tworby recently secured substantial funding from the Innovation and Energy Fund Gelderland (IEG) and various business angels, including those from the Business Angels network of Oost NL. This capital injection will allow Tworby to expand its marketing activities, grow its sales and marketing team, and enhance brand awareness. Additionally, the funds will be used for further product development to better meet market demands.
Growing Market Presence
Since its inception in 2019, Tworby has been steadily growing. By 2022, Orange Wings Investments had already joined the group of shareholders. The company now boasts over 125 sales points across the Netherlands and Belgium where the Tworby module can be purchased and installed. Moreover, the product is eligible for reimbursement through the Wet Maatschappelijke Ondersteuning (WMO) and is CE-marked as a medical device.
Community and Expert Support
Tworby’s mission is further supported by a nationwide network of occupational therapists who provide cycling lessons to users, helping them regain confidence and make optimal use of their converted tricycles. The company’s focus on user empowerment and safety has resonated well with the community, ensuring that more elderly individuals can continue to enjoy their independence.
Industry and Investor Insights
Timon de Leeuw, Investment Manager Tech at Oost NL, appreciates the simplicity and impact of Tworby’s solution, stating, ‘Our aging society increasingly demands products that support independence. Tworby’s module helps people remain active participants in society, making it an impactful investment.’ Similarly, Peter Ernsting, a former commissioner at Accell and an investor in this funding round, notes, ‘Cycling plays a crucial role in recreation, health, and reducing car traffic in cities. Tworby’s product is a valuable addition for those needing extra stability to continue cycling.’
