Amsterdam, Friday, 12 July 2024.
The 2024 European Benchmark Report on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Tech has seen unprecedented participation. This surge reflects growing awareness and commitment to fostering a more diverse and inclusive technology sector across Europe.

Increased Awareness and Participation

The record participation in the 2024 DEI in Tech European Benchmark Report underlines the increasing recognition of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as critical factors for the growth and innovation within the tech industry. This year, the report observed a 400% increase in participation from Dutch tech companies with a European background compared to last year, highlighting a significant regional commitment to DEI initiatives.

Current Maturity Levels in DEI

The report categorizes the maturity levels of tech companies in their DEI efforts, revealing that most companies are still in the ‘Adopter’ phase (level 2). This phase indicates that while there is an awareness of DEI, there is a lack of responsibility and strategic implementation. Only 2% of tech companies have achieved level 5, DEI excellence, where DEI principles are deeply embedded and drive innovation and business growth.

Key Findings and Areas for Improvement

The report’s findings are a mixed bag. While 91% of companies scored well on psychological safety, a crucial element for fostering an inclusive work environment, only 28% have systems in place to hold employees accountable for DEI behavior. Furthermore, over half of the tech companies lack a DEI strategy aligned with their business goals, and only 10% have concrete evidence of progress towards DEI objectives. These statistics highlight the need for more robust frameworks and accountability mechanisms.

Personalized Roadmaps and Strategic Insights

One of the standout features of the report is its provision of personalized roadmaps for participating companies. These roadmaps are designed to guide companies from their current DEI maturity level to achieving DEI excellence. The focus is on creating tailored, data-driven steps that can be measured and tracked over time. This approach is supported by advanced AI technology, which helps companies take actionable steps towards a more inclusive tech ecosystem.

The Role of AI and Data in DEI

Advanced AI technology plays a pivotal role in the DEI efforts of tech companies. By leveraging AI, companies can analyze vast amounts of data to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement. This data-driven approach ensures that DEI strategies are not only tailored but also effective and measurable. The emphasis on transparency and data sharing among companies is seen as a crucial step in fostering a diverse and inclusive tech industry.

Looking Ahead: The Future of DEI in Tech

As the tech industry continues to evolve, the importance of DEI cannot be overstated. Project leader Yeni Joseph highlights the significance of European-level approaches to DEI, especially given the international presence of many digital sector companies. The report emphasizes the need for openness and determination in making DEI tangible. By focusing on data, innovation, and the creation of accessible products, the tech industry can contribute to a more inclusive society.
