QphoX, a Dutch startup, has raised €2 million to develop a ‘quantum modem’ that could revolutionize quantum computing networks. The device aims to connect separate quantum processors, potentially scaling quantum computers beyond current limitations and paving the way for more powerful, interconnected quantum systems.

The funding round was led by Quantonation, Speedinvest, and High-Tech Gründerfonds, with participation from Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). QphoX’s quantum modem is designed to convert electrical and microwave signals to optical signals coherently, allowing different types of quantum computers to communicate without losing quantum information in the process. This technology could enable the creation of networks of quantum computers, offering a transformative leap in computational power and efficiency.

Key Features of the Quantum Modem

Simon Gröblacher, CEO and co-founder of QphoX, explained that the quantum modem acts similarly to a classical modem but for quantum computers. It facilitates the conversion of signals in a way that maintains the integrity of quantum information. This innovation is significant as it can work with various types of quantum computers, such as those using superconducting or topological qubits. By connecting separate processors, the modem could help scale quantum systems beyond the current limits of tens or hundreds of qubits, thus unlocking new computational capabilities.

Rick Hao, principal with Speedinvest’s Deep Tech team, highlighted the potential of QphoX to shape the future of quantum technology. He noted that the quantum modem could drive rapid progress in the field by enabling the development of quantum computers that demonstrate quantum advantage—solving problems that classical computers cannot handle efficiently.
