With support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Wageningen University & Research embarks on a four-year initiative to integrate traditional and modern farming for sustainable agriculture.

A Strategic Investment in Agricultural Innovation

The Louis Bolk Institute (LBI) has secured a significant grant from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN) to spearhead a four-year research program aimed at accelerating the development of organic agriculture [1]. This initiative, known as the ‘Acceleration Track for Organic Agriculture,’ represents a strategic move to bridge the gap between conventional and organic farming systems [1]. As highlighted by Ilse Geijzendorffer, Director of the Louis Bolk Institute, ‘This is a valuable impulse to give organic farms better access to relevant knowledge, creating a more level playing field and accelerating the transition to sustainable agriculture’ [1].

Dual Focus on Key Agricultural Sectors

The research program strategically targets two core agricultural sectors with distinct objectives [1]. In dairy farming, the initiative explores optimization strategies that prioritize animal welfare, soil health, and circular systems. The arable farming component focuses on developing robust cultivation systems without chemical crop protection [1]. This approach aligns with broader European initiatives in sustainable agriculture, as evidenced by StartLife’s support of over 400 agrifood startups aimed at sustainable food systems [2].

Practical Solutions for Real-World Challenges

The program addresses specific challenges unique to organic farming that cannot be solved through conventional agricultural knowledge alone [1]. For instance, organic farmers face distinct challenges in pest control and nutrient management without chemical interventions [1]. The research takes a system-based approach, testing innovations directly at farm level and evaluating their effectiveness within the total agricultural system [1]. This practical focus ensures that research outcomes are immediately applicable and economically viable for farmers.

Building a Sustainable Future

This initiative aligns with broader national and international efforts to enhance food security and sustainable entrepreneurship, as demonstrated by programs like the Facility for Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Food Security (FDOV) [3]. The research program aims to create a stronger knowledge base for organic farmers, better alignment between scientific research and farm realities, and accelerated transition toward more sustainable agricultural systems [1]. By focusing on practical, system-level solutions, the program represents a significant step forward in advancing sustainable agricultural practices in the Netherlands.
