Utrecht, Tuesday, 1 October 2024.
At LEVEL UP 2024, Prince Constantijn emphasized the importance of resilience in startups. He encouraged entrepreneurs to view failure as a stepping stone, understand customer needs deeply, and remain adaptable. The event highlighted the Dutch commitment to fostering a robust startup ecosystem.

The Importance of Resilience

At the opening session of LEVEL UP 2024, held today at the Eindhoven Evoluon, Prince Constantijn delivered a compelling speech on the necessity of resilience in the entrepreneurial journey. He underscored that failure should not be feared but rather embraced as a critical part of the growth process. ‘Failure is not something to fear but rather a marker of effort and ambition,’ he stated, emphasizing that overcoming setbacks is key to building something substantial and impactful.

Solving Real Customer Problems

One of the central themes of Prince Constantijn’s address was the importance of understanding and solving real customer problems. He highlighted that startups should prioritize knowing who their customers are and what they need before scaling their operations. ‘It’s super relevant to really understand your customer—who they are and what they need—before you start scaling,’ he advised. This approach not only ensures market fit but also aids in building a sustainable business model.

Case Studies of Adaptability

To illustrate his points, Prince Constantijn shared several case studies. One notable example was a company that pivoted from developing a computer-brain interface for ALS patients to diagnosing hearing problems in children. This shift not only demonstrated the company’s adaptability but also its commitment to finding a commercially viable solution. ‘Is the problem big enough?’ he questioned, urging entrepreneurs to continually assess the market viability of their solutions.

Building a Complementary Team

Prince Constantijn also addressed the challenges of scaling a startup, noting that different entrepreneurs face different obstacles. Some struggle with the initial phases of starting a business, while others find it challenging to maintain focus on a single proposition. He advised that knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses is crucial and underscored the importance of building a complementary team. ‘Success comes to those who persevere, adapt, and remain open to new possibilities, all while contributing to a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem,’ he said.

Programs and Initiatives

As the special envoy at Techleap, Prince Constantijn supports various programs designed to assist startups at different stages of their development. These include the ‘Rise’ program for scaling challenges, ‘Pole Position’ for pre-revenue deep-tech companies, and the ‘Academic Startup Competition’ for startups in their formative stages. He encouraged attendees to make the most of events like LEVEL UP by setting clear goals and being open to new connections, stating, ‘Know what you come here for’ and urging them to engage: ‘Don’t stand around at the coffee table with just the people you know.’
