Eindhoven University of Technology’s upcoming debate gathers EU candidates to discuss innovation’s impact on Europe’s growth ahead of June elections.

Innovation as a Catalyst for European Unity and Growth

On May 14, 2024, the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) will be at the forefront of shaping Europe’s future by hosting the European Innovation Debate. This event is not only timely, considering the proximity to the European parliamentary elections scheduled between June 6 and June 9, but also crucial in setting the agenda for innovation as the bedrock of European advancement. With geopolitics, labor migration, climate policy, and industrial policy on the table, the debate promises to be a fertile ground for discussions that will likely influence EU policy directions for years to come.

Luminaries and Visionaries on Europe’s Innovative Horizon

The debate will feature a number of EU lead candidates including Bas Eickhout, Malik Azmani, Dirk Gotink, Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy, Tom Berendsen, Jessika van Leeuwen, and Reinier van Lanschot. They will be joined by keynote speaker Hellen van der Plas, CEO of Signify Benelux, who is expected to bring a corporate perspective to the discussion. With welcome speeches from influential figures such as Robert-Jan Smits, TU/e’s president, Paul van Nunen, director of Brainport Development, and Theo Henrar, the debate will underscore the significance of innovation in driving job creation, economic growth, and meeting climate goals within the European Union.

Bridging Knowledge and Policy for a Progressive Europe

The role of TU/e as a nexus of knowledge and innovation will be highlighted by the work of Delia Mitcan, the university’s representative in Brussels. Mitcan’s efforts in bridging academic research with policy-making underscore the importance of a knowledge-based approach to Europe’s challenges. With initiatives like the EAISI institute for AI regulation and the EuroTeQ program to broaden student perspectives, TU/e is actively contributing to a Europe that is innovative, interconnected, and inclusive.

Deep Tech and AI: The New Frontiers of European Excellence

The European Union’s focus on deep tech and artificial intelligence as pillars of the New European Innovation Agenda demonstrates a commitment to tackling complex societal challenges through cutting-edge science and technology. TU/e’s participation in regulatory discussions, exemplified by the AI Act, and the leveraging of European grants like ERC grants for research, reflects the university’s role in shaping a Europe that leads in technological innovation, rather than merely in regulatory frameworks. This debate will be a platform for discussing how such innovation can be fostered across all of Europe, bridging the east-west divide in innovation funding and ensuring that the whole continent can benefit from the digital and green transitions.
