Münster, Tuesday, 27 August 2024.
INDUSTR_I4.0, a new European initiative, aims to accelerate digital adoption in manufacturing SMEs along the Dutch-German border. With €10 million in funding available until 2027, the project targets 80 cross-border innovation projects and 80 feasibility studies.

Kick-off Event in Münster

On 17 April 2024, the INDUSTR_I4.0 project was officially launched in Münster. This initiative, supported by the Interreg VI program Germany-Netherlands, focuses on speeding up the digital transition within the manufacturing industry in the Dutch-German border region. The event featured a panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities of digitalization for SMEs, with representatives from various government and industrial sectors highlighting the collaborative efforts required to achieve the project’s goals.

Funding and Objectives

The project boasts a substantial €10 million fund aimed at supporting feasibility studies and innovation projects. SMEs in the region can apply for grants of up to €100,000 per project through the INDUSTR_I4.0 website. The project’s goal is to facilitate 80 cross-border digital innovation projects and 80 feasibility studies by 2027, thereby enabling SMEs to catch up with industry leaders in digital technology adoption.

Execution and Support

Oost NL is responsible for executing the project, which is co-financed by the European Union and several regional governmental bodies, including MWIKE NRW and the Niedersächsisches Ministerium für Bundes-und Europaangelegenheiten und Regionale Entwicklung. Erwin Altena, project manager of KPF INDUSTR_I4.0, emphasized the importance of collaboration in digitalization efforts, stating that partnership among SMEs is crucial for success.

Application Process

SMEs interested in participating can submit applications through the project’s dedicated website, industri4-interreg.eu. The application process is designed to be straightforward, ensuring that even smaller businesses with limited resources can access the necessary funding. The project aims to create a robust support system, providing resources and expertise to help SMEs navigate the complexities of digital transformation.

Impact on the Region

A significant portion of Dutch SMEs has struggled to leverage the opportunities presented by digital transition. By targeting these businesses, INDUSTR_I4.0 hopes to bridge the technology gap and enhance the competitiveness of the region’s manufacturing sector. The project’s cross-border approach also aims to foster stronger economic ties between the Netherlands and Germany, promoting a unified effort towards innovation and growth.

Looking Forward

As the project progresses, regular updates and success stories will be shared to inspire more SMEs to join the digital revolution. By 2027, INDUSTR_I4.0 aims to have made a lasting impact on the digital landscape of the Dutch-German border region, setting a benchmark for future initiatives focused on SME digitalization.
