ZonMw Backs 38 Innovative Mental Health Projects in The Hague

The Hague, Sunday, 9 March 2025.
ZonMw supports 38 pioneering projects under the National Plan Hoofdzaken, enhancing care for brain and mental health in The Hague. This initiative integrates innovation to improve the quality of life for affected individuals.
Significant Investment in Mental Health Innovation
This comprehensive healthcare initiative comes at a crucial time, as statistics show that one in four people in the Netherlands are affected by brain or psychological conditions [1]. ZonMw, headquartered in The Hague, is collaborating with key partners including the Hersenstichting, MIND, NWO, and Health~Holland to address these challenges through evidence-based interventions [1][4].
Digital Solutions for Parkinson’s Patients
Among the innovative projects, a standout initiative focuses on improving speech therapy access for Parkinson’s disease patients through digital technology. The PERSPECTIVE innovations project has introduced the Voicetrainer app, enabling patients to independently practice speech exercises and receive personalized feedback to maintain and enhance their verbal communication abilities [1].
Substantial Funding Framework
The initiative demonstrates significant financial commitment, with a total budget of €2.6 million allocated for knowledge infrastructure development. Individual projects can receive up to €650,000 in funding, with project durations ranging from 12 to 18 months [2]. Projects must commence by July 2025 or December 2025 at the latest, ensuring timely implementation of these crucial healthcare innovations [2].
Organizational Growth and Future Impact
ZonMw’s expansion is evident in its current workforce of approximately 600 employees across various departments [6]. The organization has implemented the LEF change program (logisch, eenvoudig, functioneel) to streamline operations and enhance effectiveness. This program, incorporating both internal expertise and external consultants, is set to roll out various project releases in spring 2025 [6].
