Hengelo, Wednesday, 7 August 2024.
Energy-IO, a Dutch company specializing in smart energy monitoring for industries, has secured funding to explore partnerships in Germany. This expansion aims to help German industries optimize energy usage, replicating the success seen in the Netherlands. The move highlights growing interest in energy efficiency solutions across Europe.

Energy-IO’s Vision for Germany

Founded by Ton van Ewijk in Hengelo, the Netherlands, Energy-IO has been a pioneer in smart energy monitoring systems designed for industrial applications. Van Ewijk developed a system that functions like a smart meter for businesses, providing real-time data on energy consumption. The company recently received funding through the ‘Verkenning samenwerking Nederland-Duitsland’ program, which is dedicated to exploring potential collaborations between Dutch and German enterprises.

Strategic Partnerships and Market Exploration

The funding will allow Energy-IO to investigate the feasibility of entering the German market, with a focus on forming strategic partnerships. Key to this exploration is the collaboration with Markus Mebben from Emsland GmbH. Together, they aim to identify companies and institutions that could help adapt Energy-IO’s product for the German market. According to Mebben, the goal is to prepare the product for faster market access, ensuring it meets local regulatory and operational standards.

Support from KPF INDUSTR_I4.0

Energy-IO’s expansion efforts are supported by the Kleinprojectfonds INDUSTR_I4.0, part of the Interreg VI program Deutschland-Nederland. This initiative is co-financed by the European Union and several regional ministries and provinces in the Netherlands, including Fryslân, Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Flevoland, Gelderland, Noord-Brabant, and Limburg. The project, which officially commenced on 17 April 2024, aims to foster innovative ideas in digitalization and energy efficiency.

Broader Context of Energy Efficiency in Europe

Energy-IO’s move into Germany comes at a time when interest in energy efficiency solutions is surging across Europe. In Germany, over 500,000 households have already adopted plug-and-play solar systems, adding 9 gigawatts of photovoltaic capacity in early 2024[2]. These DIY solar installations empower homeowners to cut electricity bills and reduce carbon emissions, demonstrating the growing demand for smart energy solutions. Companies like Meyer Burger and Supersola are also contributing to this trend, offering environmentally friendly and easy-to-install solar panels[2].

Future Prospects and Market Potential

The initiative to expand into Germany is a significant step for Energy-IO. The results of feasibility studies and innovation projects will soon be announced, providing insights into the potential success of this venture. The next cut-off date for submitting innovative ideas in digitalization is 31 August 2024, followed by another opportunity on 31 December 2024. These milestones will be crucial in determining the future trajectory of Energy-IO’s operations in Germany and beyond.
