Dutch Wind Energy Association Advocates for Onshore Projects
Netherlands, Thursday, 26 September 2024.
NedZero, representing 300 members in the Dutch wind energy sector, emphasizes the national importance of onshore wind projects. The association argues that land-based wind energy is crucial for reducing grid congestion, enhancing energy security, and keeping costs low, despite the government’s offshore focus.
The Case for Onshore Wind Energy
In a letter to the Dutch cabinet, NedZero, along with other key industry stakeholders, underscored the critical role of onshore wind energy. Jan Vos, Chairman of NedZero, articulated that onshore wind projects are vital for mitigating grid congestion and bolstering national energy security. He emphasized that these projects are essential for reducing the Netherlands’ dependency on fossil fuels and foreign energy suppliers, thereby enhancing energy autonomy and safeguarding against geopolitical tensions.
Economic and Environmental Benefits
Onshore wind energy not only addresses energy security but also offers significant economic and environmental advantages. Locally generated wind power helps stabilize energy costs, mitigating the impact of fluctuating fossil fuel prices on the Dutch economy. Additionally, wind energy improves air quality by eliminating harmful emissions such as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. It also requires minimal water, making it an environmentally friendly alternative, especially crucial during periods of drought[1].
Technological Advancements
Recent technological advancements have made onshore wind turbines more efficient and less noisy. A study published in the journal ‘Geluid’ revealed that newer wind turbine models (up to 7 MW) produce only 1 dB more noise than older models, contrary to previous expectations of a 3 dB increase. This improvement in sound production demonstrates the feasibility of integrating more wind turbines into populated areas without significantly impacting residents’ quality of life[2].
Government Policies and Industry Response
Despite the demonstrated benefits of onshore wind energy, recent government policies have shown a preference for offshore wind projects. This has prompted a coalition of companies, cooperatives, and grid operators to advocate for a balanced approach that does not overlook the importance of land-based projects. Hans-Peter Oskam, Director of Policy and Energy Transition at Netbeheer Nederland, reiterated that onshore wind energy is of ‘national interest,’ essential for a resilient and sustainable energy system[3].
Upcoming Initiatives and Events
NedZero continues to champion wind energy through various initiatives and events. At the WindEnergy Hamburg event held from 24-27 September 2024, Jan Vos highlighted the importance of offshore wind in creating a new sustainable energy supply. However, he also stressed the need for a complementary focus on onshore projects to achieve the Netherlands’ carbon neutrality goals. The event attracted over 40,000 attendees, showcasing innovations from Dutch startups and scale-ups, furthering the dialogue on the future of wind energy[4].
