This initiative, which began as a pilot in 2023, is now being expanded to 40 stores nationwide. The bodycams are designed with an external screen, which displays the recorded footage in real time, serving as a deterrent to potential aggressors by making them aware of their actions being captured.
The Technology Behind the Initiative
Unlike standard bodycams used by police forces and public transportation services, Dirk’s bodycams are intended to prevent incidents rather than serve as post-incident evidence. The device is activated only in situations perceived as tense or threatening, at which point the staff member informs the individual involved that they are being recorded. This measure has the dual benefit of potentially de-escalating the situation and preserving evidence if needed for law enforcement purposes.
Balancing Safety with Privacy
While the introduction of bodycams is aimed at ensuring the safety of store personnel and shoppers, it has raised privacy concerns. The supermarket has updated its privacy policy to address these concerns, and the recordings are stored only if they need to be handed over to the police. The Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, the Dutch privacy watchdog, has expressed worries about the intrusive nature of such surveillance, especially given the close-range, face-to-face recording capability of bodycams.
