Imec Unveils Solid-State Battery with Record-Breaking Energy Density

Belgian research center Imec has developed a lithium-metal solid-state battery prototype with an impressive 1070 Wh/L energy density, surpassing current lithium-ion batteries. The cost-effective manufacturing process, adaptable to existing production lines, could revolutionize electric vehicle technology and accelerate the transition to sustainable transportation.

Advancements in Battery Technology

The breakthrough in battery technology by Imec is a result of collaborative efforts within the H2020 SOLiDIFY consortium, which includes 13 European partners. This solid-state battery employs a unique ‘liquid-to-solid’ processed solid electrolyte, combining high energy density with a cost-effective production process. The battery pouch cell, manufactured at EnergyVille in Belgium, features a doped polymerized ionic liquid (PIL)-based nanocomposite material that enhances the solidification approach.

Technical Specifications and Benefits

The new battery boasts an energy density of 1070 Wh/L, significantly higher than the 800 Wh/L of traditional lithium-ion batteries. This increase in energy density translates to longer-lasting batteries, which is crucial for applications in electric vehicles (EVs). The compact design includes a high-capacity composite cathode and a thin lithium metal anode separated by a 50 μm solid electrolyte separator. This innovative structure not only improves energy storage but also enhances safety by reducing flammability compared to liquid electrolytes.

Economic and Environmental Impact

One of the most compelling aspects of this new technology is its cost-effectiveness. The manufacturing process is adaptable to existing lithium-ion production lines, potentially lowering production costs to less than €150 per kWh. This makes the technology economically viable for mass production and widespread adoption, facilitating a quicker transition to electric vehicles. Additionally, the battery employs cobalt-lean NMC cathodes, which are environmentally friendly and reduce reliance on scarce materials.

Future Prospects and Scaling Up

The development of this high-performance battery is just the beginning. Imec and its partners are focused on scaling up the technology to meet commercial demands. Future research will explore next-generation cathode materials and advanced lithium-metal anodes using electroplating techniques. The goal is to further improve the battery’s charge rate, currently at 3 hours, and its lifespan, which stands at 100 cycles. These enhancements will solidify the battery’s applicability in various sectors, including automotive and renewable energy storage.
