Jett Rebel Headlines Innovative Green Concert at TU/e Campus
Eindhoven, Tuesday, 20 August 2024.
Dutch artist Jett Rebel is set to lead Greenfest, a groundbreaking sustainable music event at TU/e campus. The concert will showcase cutting-edge green technologies, including the GEM-Stage and DENS battery, demonstrating how large-scale events can embrace eco-friendly practices without compromising on entertainment value.
Technological Innovations at Greenfest
One of the standout features of Greenfest is the GEM-Stage, a revolutionary energy generator and stage rolled into one. This innovative structure, developed by TU/e spin-offs GEM-Stage and DENS, harnesses solar and wind energy for its power needs. The GEM-Stage also utilizes a liquid lead battery, enabling the event to run completely off-grid. Associate Professor Faas Moonen from the Innovative Structural Design group at TU/e played a significant role in the development of this pioneering stage. The DENS battery system further enhances the sustainability of the event by providing a mobile and off-grid power solution.
A New Standard for Sustainable Events
Greenfest aims to set a new benchmark for sustainability in the live music industry. Traditional music festivals often rely on diesel generators, consuming up to 130,000 liters of diesel per event. By contrast, Greenfest will operate entirely on renewable energy, significantly reducing its carbon footprint. The event organizers have gone to great lengths to ensure that every aspect of the festival is eco-friendly. From using electric trucks and forklifts for transportation and setup to serving drinks in recyclable cans and offering only vegetarian and vegan food options, Greenfest is committed to sustainability at every level.
Community and Environmental Impact
Jett Rebel, who is headlining the concert, expressed his enthusiasm for leading such a forward-thinking initiative. ‘Greenfest shows that sustainable live music is not only possible but also has the future,’ he said. By using his platform to promote environmental awareness, Jett Rebel hopes to inspire other artists and event organizers to adopt similar green practices. The event also encourages attendees to use public transportation, facilitated by the TU/e campus’s proximity to Eindhoven’s bus and train stations.
Greenfest’s Broader Reach
The GEM-Stage has already made appearances at various European festivals, including Pukkelpop in Belgium, Eurosonic Noorderslag in the Netherlands, and Rock For People in the Czech Republic. These events have demonstrated the stage’s capability to operate efficiently and sustainably. In a previous collaboration during the Ocean Race in Denmark, DENS provided a hydrogen generator that runs on formic acid, which was connected to the GEM-Stage to supply the concerts with sufficient power. This highlights the scalability and versatility of the technology, making it suitable for a wide range of events.
Future Prospects and Conclusion
Scheduled for September 21, Greenfest will feature performances by various artists, including Ciao Lucifer and Friday, alongside Jett Rebel. With room for two thousand visitors, the event aims not only to entertain but also to educate and inspire. By integrating cutting-edge green technologies and promoting sustainable practices, Greenfest represents a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of large-scale events. The initiative underscores the potential for technological innovation to drive positive change in the entertainment industry and beyond.
