Campus BioBlitz Reveals Surprising Biodiversity at University of Twente

A month-long BioBlitz study at the University of Twente campus uncovered an impressive 4,060 observations and 1,023 unique species, highlighting the area’s rich ecological diversity. The study engaged students, faculty, and researchers in documenting campus flora and fauna, including rare species like the Juniper Bug.
Significant Findings
One of the standout discoveries from the BioBlitz was the rare Juniper Bug (Jeneverbesroodwants), an insect with only 50 recorded sightings in the Netherlands since 2000. Additionally, participants identified 119 different species of moss, underscoring the ecological diversity present on the University of Twente’s campus.
Comparison with Other Universities
While the University of Twente’s results were impressive, they were surpassed by Wageningen University, which recorded 6,583 observations and 1,088 unique species. This comparison highlights the significant role both institutions play in documenting and preserving biodiversity in their respective regions.
Educational Impact
The BioBlitz not only served as a cataloging exercise but also provided an educational experience for participants. Students, faculty, and researchers were mobilized to document various species, including birds, dragonflies, and moths. This hands-on approach fostered a greater awareness and appreciation of the natural world among the university community.

The initiative was led by ITC scientists Wim Bakker and Rolf de By, who are both nature enthusiasts with a deep interest in biology. Their leadership was instrumental in the success of the BioBlitz, which saw the discovery of 330 species that had not been previously observed on campus. Future Plans
Looking ahead, the University of Twente has plans to further promote biodiversity through initiatives such as the Biodiversity Insights project, which will be shared by the Climate Centre by the end of 2024. This aligns with the university’s strategic plan, Shaping2030, which emphasizes sustainability as a priority area.
