North Holland Secures €90 Million for Ambitious Nature Restoration

The Dutch province of North Holland receives a €90.7 million government grant to implement 150 nature restoration measures. This significant investment aims to combat nitrogen deposition impacts and revitalize regional ecosystems, focusing on dunes, wetlands, and forests over the next six years.
Strategic Focus on Nature Restoration
North Holland’s initiative is part of a broader strategy to address ecological degradation caused by nitrogen deposition. The funds will be directed towards projects within Natura-2000 areas and nitrogen-sensitive zones of the Natuur Netwerk Nederland (NNN). These areas, including the dunes, Vechtplassen, and the peat meadows of Laag-Holland, are critical to maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance. The measures focus on safeguarding dune grasslands, peat moss reedlands, and bogs, with additional efforts dedicated to forest compensation and environmental research.

The restoration program is a collaborative endeavor involving nature managers, water boards, and municipalities. The program includes opening up dunes to allow the dispersal of calcium-rich sand and removing invasive shrubs from peat moss reedlands, which are essential for improving water quality. While the province initially requested €110 million, it has secured €90 million with the potential to apply for an additional €20 million by 2027. This phased funding approach ensures that the most critical projects receive immediate attention while allowing for future expansions and adjustments based on progress and emerging needs. The approval of these funds by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security, and Nature reflects confidence in North Holland’s plans to address environmental challenges proactively.
