Eurus Energy Europe B.V. receives €3 million to build a green hydrogen factory in Delfzijl, operational by 2026, using wind energy to produce sustainable hydrogen.

Significant Step Towards Sustainable Energy

The subsidy, granted under the Investeren in een Toekomstbestendige Industrie (SITI) scheme, marks a crucial advancement in the transition to sustainable energy in the Netherlands. Eurus Energy Europe B.V., a company at the forefront of renewable energy solutions, will leverage this funding to develop one of the first commercial-scale green hydrogen factories in the Groningen region. The factory aims to supply the chemical industry with green hydrogen, offering a cleaner alternative to the commonly used ‘grey’ hydrogen.

Harnessing Wind Energy

The green hydrogen production facility will utilize wind energy from Eurus’s existing onshore wind farm located in Farmsum. By employing an electrolyser, the factory will convert wind-generated electricity into hydrogen, significantly reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. This shift is expected to cut CO2 emissions by more than 50% compared to the production of grey hydrogen. The reduction is equivalent to the annual emissions of nearly 4,000 passenger cars, demonstrating the project’s potential to make a substantial environmental impact.

Educational and Economic Benefits

In addition to its environmental advantages, the green hydrogen project will provide educational opportunities and foster economic growth in the Delfzijl/Groningen region. Eurus plans to collaborate with local educational institutions to introduce students to green hydrogen technologies through internships, informational sessions, and guest lectures. This initiative aims to equip future technicians with the necessary skills and knowledge to support the region’s growing green hydrogen industry.

Broader Impact on Green Innovation

The green hydrogen factory aligns with Groningen’s broader sustainability goals, which include promoting green chemistry, biobased raw materials, and the circular economy. As a green hydrogen supplier, Eurus Energy is poised to contribute to the decarbonization of existing industrial chains and support the retention of the chemical industry in the region. The SITI subsidy program, which focuses on sustainable and circular industrial investment projects, plays a vital role in facilitating these advancements.
