The Platform Verduurzaming Industrie (PVI) will transition to the National Program for Industry Sustainability (NPVI) on June 6, 2024, enhancing support for industrial sustainability in the Netherlands.

Strategic Shift Towards Accelerated Climate Goals

The NPVI, established by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK), aims to streamline and accelerate the achievement of climate goals. By aligning demand and supply more effectively, the NPVI seeks to address the critical need for industrial sustainability in the Netherlands. Unlike its predecessor, PVI, which took a ‘bottom-up’ approach by supporting individual companies, the NPVI will operate ‘top-down’ to ensure coordinated and efficient execution of sustainability plans.

Enhanced Collaboration Across Supply Chains

One of the key aspects of this transition is the emphasis on collaboration among various stakeholders in the supply chain. Gertjan Lankhorst, VEMW Chairman, highlighted the importance of cooperation for faster realization of climate objectives. He noted, ‘We have been at the forefront of the PVI platform since 2017 because we have discovered that with many parties in the supply chain, we can more effectively, efficiently, and quickly achieve climate goals through collaboration.’ The NPVI aims to build on this foundation, encouraging more comprehensive partnerships to address sustainability challenges.

Launch Event and Future Prospects

The NPVI will officially launch on June 6, 2024, during the NPVI-Connect event in Amersfoort. This event is set to encourage participation from various industrial clusters, promoting the advancement of sustainable practices across the sector. The NPVI’s establishment marks a significant step forward in the Dutch government’s commitment to industrial decarbonization and sustainability. With substantial funding and a clear strategic direction, the NPVI is poised to make a meaningful impact on reducing the industry’s carbon footprint.

Projects and Initiatives Under NPVI

Several high-profile projects and initiatives are already underway, supported by the NPVI. For instance, Holland Malt has invested in a 22 MW electric heat pump, saving 18 million cubic meters of gas annually, making it the first fully emission-free malt house in the world. Similarly, Rockwool has electrified two production lines for stone wool, reducing CO2 emissions by 50%. The EMC Cement and HES project in Amsterdam aims to build a fully electric cement factory, contributing significantly to local emission reductions.

Government and Industry Support

The Dutch government is strongly backing these efforts. In 2023, the Ministry of EZK allocated €11.5 billion for energy generation and CO2 reduction, an increase of €3.5 billion from the previous year. Minister Micky Adriaansens reported that eight companies have already signed an expression of principles for industrial CO2 emission reduction, targeting a total of 10 megatons saved. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to achieve the national target of reducing industrial CO2 emissions by 16 megatons.
