Eindhoven University of Technology and Deerns Forge Future Laboratory Designs

Eindhoven, Wednesday, 12 March 2025.
TU/e partners with Deerns to develop cutting-edge labs, enhancing research infrastructure with innovative, safe, and efficient designs, emphasizing the importance of future-oriented scientific facilities.
Strategic Partnership Framework
In a significant development for research infrastructure, Deerns began providing specialized design and consultancy services to TU Eindhoven through a framework contract initiated in early Q2 2024 [1]. The partnership leverages Deerns’ extensive experience, with the company operating globally through almost 500 staff members across multiple international offices [2]. This collaboration aims to enhance the university’s research capabilities through state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, focusing on safe and efficient solutions [1].
Successful Project Implementation
The partnership has already yielded notable results, including the transformation of a workshop into an advanced 3D Matrix printer lab spanning 25 m² in the Matrix building, completed in June 2024 [3]. Additionally, Deerns successfully addressed critical infrastructure challenges by repairing process cooling systems for helium cryostats in the Cascade building, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing research activities [1]. Project Manager Ilse Chatrou of TU/e Real Estate Projects emphasized the value of Deerns’ expertise in their operations [1].
Future-Focused Developments
A key ongoing project involves the development of an electrical engineering laboratory for renewable energy research in the DIFFER building [1]. This specialized facility, covering 50 m², will incorporate advanced safety systems and specialized sprinkler installations, particularly focusing on research related to offshore wind farms [3]. The laboratory exemplifies the partnership’s commitment to sustainable and innovative research infrastructure [1].
Long-term Vision and Impact
Deerns, with its extensive portfolio in laboratory and cleanroom development [2], brings crucial expertise to TU/e’s ambitious research agenda. Yilmaz Akbina, Advisor at Deerns, highlighted TU Eindhoven’s pivotal role in societal progress and its reputation for pioneering research [1]. The framework contract’s flexible structure enables Deerns to respond efficiently to TU/e’s evolving needs, ensuring continuous advancement in research facility development [3].
