Brussels, Thursday, 22 August 2024.
Wero, a digital wallet developed by European banks, is set to rival Visa and Mastercard. Launching in Germany and Belgium in 2024, it offers swift money transfers using phone numbers. The platform aims to enhance financial autonomy in the eurozone and will expand features in coming years.

A Unified European Payment System

Wero was developed under the European Payments Initiative (EPI), which was established in 2021 by a coalition of 16 European banks and financial institutions. The initiative’s primary goal is to create a unified digital payment service that enhances accessibility and achieves strategic financial autonomy within the eurozone. With 13 out of 20 eurozone countries lacking a national card scheme, the reliance on international providers for 64% of electronically initiated transactions underscores the necessity of a homegrown solution.

Innovative Features and Benefits

One of Wero’s standout features is its ability to transfer money using just a phone number, eliminating the need for IBANs. This makes transactions faster and more convenient, allowing users to send and receive money almost instantaneously. According to a spokesperson for KBC, the system is currently offered free of charge and is designed to deliver high-speed transactions. Additionally, Wero plans to expand its features by 2025 and 2026 to include online merchant payments, QR code invoicing, and buy now-pay later options.

Strategic Impact and Consumer Benefits

Wero’s introduction aims to diversify the banking and payments landscape in Europe, providing significant benefits to consumers and those who are financially excluded. The European Consumers’ Organisation (BEUC) supports the EPI but emphasizes the need for further development to ensure it is accessible to all consumers. For instance, BEUC highlights the importance of offering payment cards and ensuring the safety of shoppers by providing a charge-back mechanism.

Future Expansion Plans

Following its initial rollouts in Germany and Belgium, Wero is set to launch in France by September 2024. Participating French banks include BNP Paribas, BPCE, Crédit Agricole, Crédit Mutuel, La Banque Postale, and Société Générale. Initially, the app will focus on peer-to-peer payments between clients of these banks, with plans to expand its functionalities for broader use in the near future. Martina Weimert, CEO of EPI, stated that Wero aims to offer all types of payments through a single wallet, combining simplicity, immediacy, and security.

Conclusion

As Wero continues to roll out across Europe, it represents a significant step towards achieving financial independence and enhancing digital payment accessibility within the eurozone. By offering a seamless, secure, and efficient payment solution, Wero is poised to challenge the dominance of established giants like Visa and Mastercard, potentially reshaping the landscape of digital payments in Europe.
