Lidl Pioneers Green Hydrogen Truck in French Retail
Netherlands, Tuesday, 9 July 2024.
Lidl introduces France’s first green hydrogen-powered delivery truck, marking a significant step in sustainable retail logistics. The 26-tonne vehicle, with a 400km range, now serves Nantes region stores, showcasing Lidl’s commitment to reducing emissions in its supply chain.
A Collaborative Effort
The introduction of the green hydrogen-powered truck is the result of a collaboration between Lidl, the Jacky Perrenot Group, and Lhyfe. This partnership was solidified with the signing of a charter at the Salon de l’Agriculture in 2022, which committed the parties to deploying the first green hydrogen-powered heavy goods vehicle (HGV) on French roads. Jacky Perrenot, a major player in haulage and logistics, retrofitted the vehicle, while Lhyfe, a green hydrogen producer, supplies the renewable hydrogen fuel.
Operational Since Early 2024
Since the beginning of 2024, the hydrogen-powered truck has been operating from Lidl’s logistics platform in Carquefou, Loire-Atlantique. The 26-tonne truck is equipped with a 100 kW fuel cell and boasts a range of 400 kilometers, sufficient for delivering goods to Lidl supermarkets throughout the Nantes region. It refuels at the multi-energy station in La Roche-sur-Yon, which has been operational since December 2021 and provides 100% renewable green hydrogen.
Commitment to Sustainability
Lidl’s initiative aligns with its broader strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable logistics. Xavier Pierre, Head of Transport and Environment at Lidl, emphasized the importance of this project, stating, ‘We’re proud to have put this first green hydrogen vehicle on the road, which represents a significant step forward in our commitment to the energy transition.’ This sentiment was echoed by partners Lhyfe and Jacky Perrenot, who are equally committed to environmental stewardship.
Future Prospects
This pioneering project is not just a standalone achievement but part of an ongoing commitment to sustainability. Lidl began its transition to alternative energy vehicles with all-electric deliveries in 2021. The hydrogen-powered truck marks a new stage in this journey, showcasing the company’s dedication to continually renewing part of its fleet with eco-friendly options. As part of this commitment, Lidl plans to further expand its fleet of hydrogen-powered vehicles in the coming years.
