Haarlem, Saturday, 14 September 2024.
The ‘voorRecht’ pilot project by the Dutch Judiciary has won the Gouden Zandloper award for Access to Justice. This innovative initiative aims to simplify legal processes and improve efficiency, marking the first time a Judiciary project has received such recognition. The jury praised its potential for nationwide expansion and impact across various legal domains.

A Landmark Achievement

The Gouden Zandloper, a highly regarded award in the Dutch legal sector, was presented to the ‘voorRecht’ project on Thursday evening, 12 September 2024, in Haarlem. The award ceremony, held at the Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen (KIT), celebrated the project’s contribution to making justice more accessible. This marks the first time a judiciary initiative has earned this prestigious accolade.

The ‘voorRecht’ initiative offers a novel approach to resolving conflicts, initially focusing on disputes within homeowners’ associations (VVE) but with plans to extend to other legal areas. By leveraging psychological insights, design thinking, IT, and extensive legal expertise, ‘voorRecht’ aims to provide faster, more accessible resolutions for legal issues. This holistic approach has impressed many, including the award jury, who noted its potential for broader application.

Expansion and Future Potential

Jury member Ivar Timmer commended ‘voorRecht’ for its current achievements and its future potential. He emphasized that the initiative could be scaled nationwide and applied to various other legal fields, making it a significant innovation in the judiciary system. Timmer highlighted that such a project could have a profound impact on improving access to justice across the country.

Recognition and Acknowledgments

Pieter van Riemsdijk, a co-initiator of the project, expressed gratitude towards his colleagues and supporters during the award ceremony. He acknowledged the contributions of Bart Jan van Ettekoven and Eveline de Greeve, as well as the support from the presidents of different courts and the Council for the Judiciary. Van Riemsdijk’s remarks underscored the collective effort that made ‘voorRecht’ a success.

Expert Panel’s Evaluation

The Gouden Zandloper jury, including experts such as Nathalie Gloudemans-Voogd and Mohammed Almarini, praised ‘voorRecht’ for integrating diverse perspectives. They acknowledged the challenges of innovating within the judiciary and appreciated the project’s setting, which allowed it to operate somewhat independently. The jury was particularly impressed with ‘voorRecht’s’ combination of psychological, IT, and legal expertise in creating a user-friendly legal solution.

A Step Towards Accessible Justice

Henk Naves, Chairman of the Council for the Judiciary, expressed his pride in the ‘voorRecht’ project’s recognition. He noted that the pilot’s focus on providing quick and easy access to justice for all has been highly valued. The Gouden Zandloper award serves as an encouragement to continue developing initiatives that enhance access to legal resources and justice.
