Amsterdam, Friday, 5 December 2025.
Over €1 billion has been invested by Dutch regional development companies, boosting over 2,500 SMEs in innovation since 2021. This supports sustainability and economic growth amid global challenges.

A Decade of Innovation Investment

Since 2021, nine regional development companies (ROMs) in the Netherlands have collectively invested over €1 billion into innovation projects, impacting more than 2,500 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This funding has been crucial in areas like investment, internationalization, and sustainability, significantly enhancing the innovation capacity of the Netherlands. These efforts are particularly vital as they address pressing challenges such as climate change and economic growth [1].

Regional Impact and Economic Growth

The investments by ROMs have not only boosted innovation but have also facilitated strategic economic growth. For instance, in 2024 alone, €236 million was injected into 538 innovation projects, and €215 million was channeled into 367 companies. This has expanded the portfolio to 1,137 innovative enterprises. Additionally, the attraction of 155 foreign companies, contributing over €2 billion to the Dutch economy, is expected to create more than 4,500 high-quality jobs in the coming years [1].

Innovative Examples from Across Regions

In Noord-Holland, DOPS Recycling Technologies is a prime example of ROMs’ impact, employing Direct Carbon Immobilization technology to transform waste into valuable resources with reduced CO2 emissions. This approach exemplifies how regional innovation can tackle global environmental challenges while fostering economic resilience [1].

Future Prospects and Strategic Directions

Looking ahead, the ROMs’ strategy involves continued collaboration with governmental and European entities to accelerate societal transitions and ensure sustainable economic development. The emphasis on nurturing innovative entrepreneurship within regions is expected to position Dutch companies prominently on the international stage, thereby reinforcing the country’s economic autonomy and productivity [1].
