€5 Million Boost for DOPS Recycling in Green Tech Leap

Amsterdam, Friday, 15 August 2025.
ROM InWest and InnovationQuarter invested €5 million in DOPS Recycling Technologies, enabling advancements in waste processing and showcasing the vital role of North Holland’s innovation ecosystem.
Investment Catalyzes Innovation in Waste Processing
This spring, ROM InWest and InnovationQuarter, backed by several private partners, injected €5 million into DOPS Recycling Technologies, a company located in Noord-Holland, renowned for its state-of-the-art waste processing technologies. This capital injection allows DOPS to move from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 to TRL 7-8, where the technology will be validated on a larger scale, tested for efficiency, and primed for its first commercial plant [1].
Strategic Development Towards Commercialization
DOPS’s innovative Direct Carbon Immobilization (DCI) technology promises to convert difficult-to-recycle waste into reusable products such as synthetic gas (syngas) and activated carbon, presenting a considerably lower carbon footprint than traditional methods [1]. The upcoming demonstration plant might be hosted by industrial partners, such as a brick factory or waste processor, as these facilities are set to benefit significantly from residual syngas given the congestion issues in the Dutch natural gas network [1].
The Role of North Holland’s Ecosystem
The investment underscores the critical role played by the robust ecosystem in North Holland, which has supported DOPS since 2021 through initiatives like a €350,000 proof-of-concept funding from the Innovation Fund Noord-Holland and participation in accelerator programs [1]. According to Reynier de Monchy, investment manager at ROM InWest, “This investment initiative pivots towards diminishing societal challenges—waste processing, sustainable energy, and circular raw materials—while emphasizing the significance of an enabling ecosystem” [1].
Addressing the Global Green Tech Imperative
As Earth Overshoot Day is marked on August 15, 2025—highlighting when humanity exhausts its annual resource budget—initiatives like those of DOPS become critical [2]. The adoption of advanced green technologies fits into a broader narrative where innovative companies like DOPS empathize systemic changes necessary to decrease reliance on non-renewables and push towards circular economy practices. Companies like Circle Economy further the global collaborative effort by empowering industries to implement scalable solutions [3].
