Groningen, Friday, 4 April 2025.
Three Groningen startups have reached the top 10 in the Academic Startup Competition, demonstrating their significant contributions to innovation and research in the Netherlands.

Breakthrough Medical Innovation Takes Center Stage

Among the standout performers is MimeCure, a groundbreaking medical technology startup that has developed MC002, an active fragment of the Mimecan protein. Led by Dr. Luke van der Koog, along with Professors Reinoud Gosens, Anika Nagelkerke, and Erik Frijlink, this innovation promises to transform the lives of thousands of COPD patients by promoting the regeneration of alveolar epithelial cells and lung tissue [1]. This medical breakthrough represents a significant advancement in respiratory medicine, positioning Groningen at the forefront of therapeutic innovation.

Advancing Scientific Research and Technology

The competition has also highlighted QT Sense, developed by Professor Romana Schirhagl, which brings unprecedented precision to biological research through Nano-MRI technology [1]. In the sustainable computing sector, IMChip, created by Professor Tamalika Banerjee’s team including Ruben Hamming-Green, Saurabh Soni, Azminul Jaman, and Ernst Jacobs, is pioneering energy-efficient computing chips that aim to accelerate AI applications while maintaining environmental responsibility [1].

University’s Role in Innovation Ecosystem

The success of these startups underscores the University of Groningen’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurship across academic disciplines. The UMCG Innovation Center and Business Generator have played crucial supporting roles in nurturing these innovations [1]. This achievement is particularly significant as these three startups were selected from an initial pool that included seven Groningen-based startups in the top 40 [1].

Future Prospects and Recognition

The selected startups will participate in a trade mission to Silicon Valley, with a spotlight presentation scheduled for June 2 at the Knowledge Transfer Office masterclass in Brainport Eindhoven [1]. This recognition at the national level, supported by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate, Techleap, and Universities of the Netherlands, positions these Groningen-based innovations for potential global impact and further development [1].
