At a Den Haag event, Simone Fredriksz stressed education’s vital role in fostering innovation and economic growth, aligning educational programs with industry needs to enhance global competitiveness.

The Role of Education in Innovation

Simone Fredriksz, a prominent figure in the Dutch educational landscape, recently underscored the critical role of education in driving innovation and economic growth during an event in Den Haag. As a member of the Taskforce Human Capital under the Economic Board Zuid-Holland, Fredriksz emphasized the need to align educational initiatives with industry demands to maintain the Netherlands’ competitive edge in the global innovation arena [1].

Vocational Education as a Social Engine

Fredriksz, who serves as the chair of the Executive Board of ROC Albeda, highlighted the unique role of vocational education (mbo) in not only supplying the economy with skilled labor but also acting as an engine for social mobility and integration. She described vocational classrooms as “mini-societies,” where diverse groups of students learn not only professional skills but also essential social skills, preparing them for a rapidly changing society [1].

Innovation and Sustainability in Education

Under Fredriksz’s leadership, ROC Albeda has been recognized for its innovative educational programs, including the Talenthub op Zuid, which provides at-risk youth with new opportunities. The institution has also been named the most sustainable vocational education institution in the Netherlands for the past two years, reflecting its commitment to integrating sustainability into its educational framework [1].

Future Directions and Challenges

Looking ahead, Fredriksz and the Taskforce Human Capital aim to offer development opportunities to at least 55,000 employees and facilitate 10,000 job transitions within the region. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to attract international knowledge workers and ensure the Dutch workforce is equipped with the necessary skills to thrive in a dynamic global market [1].
