Maastricht, Thursday, 27 June 2024.
Provincie Limburg has been awarded the prestigious ‘Regional Innovation Valley’ label by the European Union, recognizing its leading position in innovation. This accolade opens new opportunities for growth and investment in the region, positioning Limburg at the forefront of European innovation efforts.

Strategic Recognition and Regional Growth

On 19 June 2024, EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth, Iliana Ivanova, announced during a plenary session of the Committee of the Regions that Provincie Limburg, along with 150 other European regions, has been awarded the ‘Regional Innovation Valley’ label. This recognition is part of a broader initiative by the European Union to enhance regional innovation ecosystems and bridge the innovation gap across Europe.

EU’s Commitment to Innovation

The European Commission has allocated €116 million under the European Innovation Ecosystems programme of Horizon Europe to support these regions. The funding will aid in strengthening innovation policies, fostering investments, and addressing key challenges such as digital transformation, healthcare improvements, and environmental sustainability. Of the 151 regions identified, 72 are on track to become Regional Innovation Valleys, pending the signature of grant agreements.

Limburg’s Strategic Initiatives

Limburg’s recognition is a testament to the strategic decisions taken by its Provincial States, which have heavily invested in innovative initiatives like the Brightlands campuses. These decisions have not only positioned Limburg as a leader in innovation but also facilitated its active participation in networks such as the European Chemical Regions Network and the Vanguard Initiative.

Future Prospects and Funding

In 2025, the EU will further bolster these efforts with an additional €46 million through the Horizon Europe programme. This funding is intended to help European regions address global challenges and enhance their competitiveness. Limburg, having already been promoted to Innovation Leader on the Regional Innovation Scoreboard last year, is well-positioned to leverage these funds to further its innovation potential.

Conclusion

The awarding of the ‘Regional Innovation Valley’ label to Provincie Limburg underscores the region’s commitment to innovation and strategic growth. With substantial EU support, Limburg is poised to continue its trajectory as a leading innovation hub, setting an example for other regions in Europe. This recognition not only highlights Limburg’s achievements but also promises a sustainable and competitive future for the region.
