NWO Expands Venture Challenge to Boost MedTech Innovation

Netherlands, Tuesday, 6 May 2025.
The NWO’s Venture Challenge now accepts 12 teams, thanks to increased funding. This expansion promotes Life Sciences & MedTech innovation by helping researchers transform ideas into startups.
Enhanced Support for Innovation
The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has significantly expanded its Venture Challenge program, now accommodating twelve teams in total, with six additional spots specifically dedicated to MedTech innovations thanks to increased funding from the Ministry of Economic Affairs [1]. This expansion represents a substantial commitment to fostering healthcare technology development in the Netherlands. The program’s effectiveness was recently demonstrated by Capsule Photonics, which won the Winter 2024/2025 edition with their innovative pill-sized camera technology for cancer detection [2].
Comprehensive Program Structure
The program operates through an intensive eight to ten-week curriculum, featuring two distinct coaching tracks running from October 2025 to February 2026 [3]. Teams receive specialized guidance in developing their business plans through two three-day bootcamps and regular coaching sessions. The first track runs from October to November 2025, while the second extends from November 2025 to February 2026, culminating in pitch presentations to experienced entrepreneurs and investors [3].
Application Process and Timeline
Prospective teams can submit their applications starting May 6, 2025, with a deadline of July 1, 2025, at 14:00 CET [1]. The program is specifically designed for teams of three to four members who are working to commercialize novel technological findings or innovative applications of existing technology [3]. Following the application period, selected teams will be announced in September 2025, with the program commencing in October [3].
Collaborative Innovation Ecosystem
The initiative is strengthened through collaboration between NWO, Health~Holland, and Holland High Tech [1]. This partnership creates a robust support system for emerging healthcare innovations, operating within the established LifeSciences@Work accelerator program, which has been fostering life sciences startups since 2008 [4]. The program’s expansion aligns with broader efforts to enhance the Netherlands’ position in medical technology innovation, as evidenced by recent successful ventures in the sector [2].
