Apolitical receives $5 million from Google.org to train one million civil servants in ethical and efficient AI use over the next two years.

Apolitical and Google.org Partnership

Apolitical, a global learning platform, has secured a $5 million (€4.6 million) grant from Google.org. This partnership aims to scale up the Government AI Campus program, designed to train civil servants worldwide in the ethical and efficient use of artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative is especially significant as it addresses the current gap in AI training within the public sector.

Scaling Up the Government AI Campus

The Government AI Campus, launched in its pilot phase, has already trained 13,000 public servants. With the new funding, the initiative aims to expand its reach to one million government workers over the next two years. This expansion will include five new courses, briefings for senior decision-makers, a thought leadership series, and the development of new tools and frameworks for government officials.

Focusing on Ethical AI

One of the core components of the Government AI Campus is its emphasis on ethical AI usage. Public servants will be trained not only in the technical aspects of AI but also in understanding the ethical implications of AI technologies. This includes addressing potential harms and ensuring that AI applications are fair and just. Murat Soncul, Head of Privacy at the Central Digital and Data Office in the UK’s Cabinet Office, highlighted how the training made him more mindful of AI’s ethical issues.

Localized Content and Global Reach

Apolitical’s program aims to adapt its content to various country contexts by translating materials into ten languages and developing country-specific case studies. This localized approach ensures that the training is relevant and accessible to government workers in different regions. The program will also draw on local and regional AI experts to provide insights tailored to specific governmental needs.

Benefits of AI Training in Public Sector

The benefits of this training are manifold. By equipping civil servants with AI skills, governments can enhance service delivery, improve policy implementation, and streamline operations. Rowan Barnett, Director for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa at Google.org, emphasized the transformative power of AI for the public sector. The initiative aims to create a knowledgeable and tech-savvy workforce capable of leveraging AI responsibly and effectively.

Future-ready Government Workforce

As AI continues to evolve, it is crucial for governments to stay ahead of the curve. Robyn Scott, CEO and co-founder of Apolitical, noted that this funding will support a critical levelling up of governments, enabling them to succeed and lead in the age of AI. The initiative underscores the importance of creating future-ready, technology-fluent government leaders and workers who can harness AI’s potential for public good.
